When I turned 16 my parents spoiled me by buying me my first car, a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am. Believe it or not, I’ve never owned another car after getting that one, some seventeen years later. It’s had its share of problems during that time, but all the problems have been fixable. Not being even remotely a car enthusiast, I’ve always been happy with just having something to get me safely from point A to point B, regardless of the fact that kids have been born and started driving during the period of time I’ve owned this car.

Back in September I posted about the Supergirl bust from DC Direct, designed by comic artist Amanda Conner. Last week the next piece in that same line released, this time featuring Zatanna. Much like Supergirl, this isn’t the first time Zatanna has been included in the Women of DC collection. The first time was several years ago when Adam Hughes designed a bust for the very first series. I’ll get around to taking better pictures of that one eventually, but I do have one shot in my Flickr gallery of that original bust. I definitely think the new Conner bust trumps the Hughes one, even if I do love the goofy pose and expression Zatanna has in that original. The new one is a lot more dynamic, and I really love everything about the base, from the curling book pages to the gargoyles in back to the translucent spell fire at the point where Zatanna is coming out of the tome. I’ve posted higher resolution shots in my Flickr, where you can see lots of other toys and collectibles as well.

The end of each year is a bonanza time for video gamers. The biggest and best games of the year tend to release in the final quarter, just in time to hit stores for Christmas, and older games released prior to that quarter usually see some pretty steep price cuts as holiday promotions. These price cuts usually happen on Black Friday, again on Cyber Monday, and then once more during the final week of the year, but in 2011 the bargain gaming deals ran all the way from Black Friday through the first day of 2012.

The most recent half-season of Doctor Who and the Christmas special that followed left me pretty disappointed, to the point of questioning my faith in Steven Moffat. When Russell T. Davies was running the show, the episodes Steven Moffat wrote are some of my very favorites. The two parter with “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances” has some genuinely creepy moments, and it introduces Jack Harkness, who would go on to be one of the best characters created by the revamp. “The Girl in the Fireplace” is a fantastically tragic time travel love story that plays with the problems and nuances of jumping through time and space. “Blink” probably is my all-time favorite Doctor Who episode and just might be the overall creepiest episode of any TV show I’ve ever watched. I even enjoyed the two parter that introduces River Song, “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead.” In those, River’s story is intriguing, and she’s a character I wanted to know more about.
