GreenArrow00

Prior to CW’s Arrow, the Green Arrow was a lot less CW-dude and a lot more Robin Hood-esque. Truth be told, I really like Arrow a lot, and I just might like the way Oliver Queen is portrayed there even more than I like the original comics version. Nevertheless, this is indeed the original comics version, as portrayed in a bust as part of the Heroes of the DC Universe series. This one was limited to 3000 pieces and came out in 2009.

EmmaFrost00

Here’s the Emma Frost premium format figure from way back in 2009. Sideshow Collectibles made two versions of this one, an exclusive and a standard edition. The exclusive came with an optional hand holding Cyclops’ visor, but I opted for the regular edition. I like the sculpt and pose a lot, and I especially like that Emma’s cape is poseable via some hidden wires inside it. I’m not crazy about her face, though. It’s cartoonier than Sideshow’s other premium formats tend to be, and I think it’s supposed to be inspired by J. Scott Campbell’s art. It’s not a dealbreaker for the overall statue, but I would have preferred something closer to the style of the other Marvel pieces.

BlackCat00

I’m following up yesterday’s Catwoman post with her feline fatale counterpart at Marvel Comics. It really is kind of funny, the number of parallels you can find between Catwoman and Black Cat. Both are sultry female jewel theives, both dress in tight black catsuits, and both alternate between antagonist and romantic interest for the male hero (Batman at DC and Spider-Man at Marvel). This Black Cat bishoujo statue came out a while back, but this is the first time I’ve gotten around to photographing it.

Catwoman00

Last month I took pictures of and posted DC’s newest Catwoman statue, featuring Selina Kyle with her New 52 look. Prior to that statue’s release, DC Direct had another Catwoman in the Cover Girls of DC statue line, and that’s the one I’m showing off today. This one is a pretty awesome statue in every way and is based on the art of Adam Hughes. I’m especially happy with the way the colors and lighting turned out in these photos.

Hercules00

Time for another entry in the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection from Eaglemoss! This time the featured character is Hercules, who was #68 in the series. I realized that I haven’t really given a good sense of scale for these particular figurines, so a lot of you probably are looking at these things and thinking they’re just crappily painted statues. While they are indeed often crappily painted, they are pretty tiny, usually around the size of a chess piece. This Hercules, for example is around 3 3/4″ tall, from the top of his head to the bottom of the base. When you look at them from the proper distance (that is, not zoomed all the heck in with a digital SLR) they end up looking pretty cool. I hope to have a nice display eventually where I can put all of them up and take some group photos to give a better sense of what they’re supposed to look like. For now you’ll just have to put up with my zoomed in macro pics.

AdmiralAckbar00

Kenner made the classic small-scale Star Wars action figures, as well as larger 12 inch ones. Hasbro eventually bought out Kenner, and they retain the Star Wars license to this day. Nowadays Sideshow Collectibles also has a Star Wars toy license, and they have been the dominant company making 12 inch figures for the last several years. They have yet to make Admiral Ackbar, though, so for now this Hasbro version is the only official way to have him in your 12 inch Star Wars collection. The Hasbro figures generally lack the polish and detail (and price tag) of Sideshow toys, but there’s a sort of simplistic retro charm about them that I still love.

Starbuck00

Quantum Mechanix’s Little Damn Heroes line, based on cartoony artwork of the Serenity crew from Firefly, proved to be so popular that they branched the series out into Battlestar Galactica a few years ago. Only a couple of BSG pieces have been released so far, but there’s always the chance for more since QmX still holds the license and has been putting out some great non-cartoony Galactica collectibles. This one is Starbuck, complete with her Viper helmet, sidearm, and cigar.

X-2300

Back in 2011, Bowen Designs created a X-23 statue as a website exclusive. In some ways it’s a shame that they made this one such a limited exclusive, because X-23 is a great character, and this statue looks fantastic. She was limited to only 500 pieces, and I managed to snag one into my collection at that time. The limited nature made her hard for a lot of folks to get before she sold out, but it did help rocket her value up on the secondary market.

SwampThing00

I delved into some older pieces in my collection again to take pictures of this Swamp Thing bust today. He’s bulkier than the other characters in this line, and the increased size keeps him more or less in scale with the others. Swamp Thing might have my favorite base from this entire bust series, from the clear plant thingies to the tiny yellow frog to the big lizard dude hanging out on the back.

Aquaman00

The bust I’m featuring today is one that I got a long while back and actually photographed way back in 2009. Even though the pictures are old, I still like them and wanted to show them off with today’s collectible, the Aquaman bust from DC Direct’s Heroes of the DC Universe line. This is the bust series that eventually would become the current, post-New 52 DC Comics Superheroes series. Aquaman is the most frequent butt of superhero jokes, and surprisingly he just might be my favorite bust in the series. I really like everything about this piece, from the sculpt and pose to the excellent paint application. the base is very dynamic with the partly translucent waves and tentacles reaching up. Aquaman also displays very nicely with the Mera bust, which I’ll feature later.
