movies2014

Time for my annual “what I watched last year post!” The past few years I’ve set a goal for myself to watch an average of a movie a week, in the hopes of ending up with at least 52 movies seen by the end of the year. I started out strong in 2014 with 12 movies in January, but I quickly got busy, and the viewings tapered off. I tried to catch up towards the end of the year, but the end total was just 30 movies. I also missed the goal in 2013, coming in at 29 movies. I’m going to give the 52 goal another try in 2015, and hopefully I won’t be reporting some woefully low number in December. Here’s what I ended up watching throughout the year that just ended:

2014movies

At the beginning of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 I posted lists of all the movies I’d watched during the year just ending. I also set a goal for myself to watch 52 movies during 2013, averaging one movie a week. That was a very reachable goal in 2012, but somehow I fell far short this past year. I ended up with only 29 movies to my credit, something I attribute to a combination of my watching a ton of TV when I normally would have seen movies, my resistance to actually going out to theaters during the year, and my general disinterest in newly releasing movies, as compared to in previous years. Even though I botched the goal for 2013 I’m setting it again for 2014. This year I’ll watch 52 movies, and I’ll check back in with another annual post once I’ve done it. Here’s the too short list of all my 2013 movies:

The Steam Summer Sale has come and gone, and it cut a bloody swathe through many a wallet. I managed not to spend much money at all but ended up with quite a few new games by the end, and not just on Steam. Just before and during the sale, I had some coupons and free game codes from another gaming site called Arm Chair Empire and those paired well with some of the daily and flash deals that were running during the sale. I ended up with a bunch of loot for very little money, and I decided to compile a list of all the new gaming acquisitions here. The purpose of this post is to give myself a reference so that I won’t forget and actually will play all of the stuff I got, but I’m also interested in getting comments from my friends to see what games you all ended up with and what you think about them. Here’s my rundown, on Steam and off:

DeadIslandRiptide

Hey, I uploaded something onto the Yoo-Toobs! Deep Silver sent a copy of Dead Island: Riptide to Fandomania for us to review. I covered the game with a text review yesterday, and today I uploaded my video review. Check it out, and watch me chop up the undead.

Omerta

I reviewed the new Kalypso game, Omerta: City of Gangsters, this week on Fandomania, and to supplement the written review I recorded myself playing the first 45 minutes of the game with commentary. It’s a gangland strategy game set in Prohibition era Atlantic City. Or, as I like to call it, it’s a Nucky Thompson simulator. It doesn’t quite reach the dramatic heights of Boardwalk Empire, but it does provide some silly fun. You can read my full review over at Fandomania, or you can just check out the gameplay here.

2012Movies

At the start of 2012 I posted a list of all the movies I’d watched during 2011. In keeping with tradition, I tracked my movie watching again through 2012 and decided to put up another post this year. It’s partly to remind myself of what I saw when, but it’s mostly a motivational tool. I review a lot of movies, games, TV, and other stuff through Fandomania, so I like to keep on top of as many films as I can each year. In 2011 I watched 47 movies, so I set a goal of 52 (averaging one a week) for 2012. As it turns out, I beat my goal by three. Here’s what I watched in 2012 (some for the first time, some for rewatches, some in theaters, and some at home):

Photo credit to Dice Hate Me

I recently added a HD webcam to my arsenal of computer appendages. I picked up the Logitech C920 and have been messing around with it to figure out how all the features work. I wanted to make a proper video to see how YouTube-easy it was, so I also grabbed the AVS Video Editor and shot a how-to video. I’ll be using this clip as part of an article on Fandomania this coming week, but I wanted to go ahead and show it off on its own now. I had to use two different microphones, so the audio quality changes a minute or so into the video. I’ll be trying to figure out a better way to handle that in the future, and I’ll also be investigating better lighting and how to keep the camera from refocusing all the time. That said, I’m pretty happy with the results. Check it out, and let me teach you how to play the board and dice game King of Tokyo:

At the beginning of this year, I set a goal to watch at least 52 movies in 2012. To keep myself accountable, I decided to compile a so-far list and to see how my viewing is tracking, as compared to my goal. Here’s the list of movies I’ve seen from January 1, 2012 through current:

I think the last Stephen King book I read was either the final volume of The Dark Tower or Under the Dome, whenever they came out. It’s been a while since I’ve read King, but he’s always been one of my favorite authors, ever since I cracked open Christine way back in middle school. After a long binge of epic fantasy books, I decided it was time for something different, so I grabbed the e-book of 11/22/63, which I just finished last night.

Time for a nerd milestone! Back in November 2005 my friend Keenan and I sat outside the local Best Buy all night long so that we could each get a then-brand new Xbox 360 on launch day. With a little time share help from my parents, we made it through the night and eventually stumbled home the next morning with our shiny new game systems. I can’t remember which games Keenan picked up, but my first batch was Perfect Dark Zero, Amped 3, and Condemned: Criminal Origins.
