Last year the power supply in my computer suddenly died. I’d built that computer about four years earlier and hadn’t done any appreciable upgrades since then, so it was starting to show its age. Still, the sudden loss of a power supply isn’t good, especially when the bulk of my day is spent working online. I had to pick up a new PSU right away, so I had to settle for whatever the local computer shop had. As it turned out, what they had was a super-loud 460W supply that barely could power all my components. Since then I’ve been wanting to put a new system together, and I finally took the plunge this week.

There were some really good discounts on NewEgg and Amazon for some of the parts I was interested in getting, so I went for it. It took a couple of days for me to get everything put together and up and running, and I ended up going back to that same local computer shop to buy my first SSD ever. Now it’s all assembled and running smoothly, and I’m astonished by my increased workflow. The solid state drive makes all the speed difference in the world, and having more RAM and processing cores doesn’t hurt, either. I cannibalized a few parts from my previous system that I hope to replace in the coming months, but for now I couldn’t be happier with the way this thing turned out.

Here’s a rundown of everything that went into the computer:

  • Cooler Master HAF XM

  • AS Rock LGA1155 Z77 Extreme4

  • Intel Core i5-3570K Quad-Core 3.4GHz
  • (with Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler)

I’ve never documented a computer build before, but I inevitably forget what I’ve put into my system, so I decided to take a bunch of photos while I worked this time. This post mostly is intended as a reference point for myself so that I can look back later and remember my setup without having to dig into the computer itself. I decided to go ahead and write it up and share all this stuff because, hey, why not?
