The Steam Summer Sale has come and gone, and it cut a bloody swathe through many a wallet. I managed not to spend much money at all but ended up with quite a few new games by the end, and not just on Steam. Just before and during the sale, I had some coupons and free game codes from another gaming site called Arm Chair Empire and those paired well with some of the daily and flash deals that were running during the sale. I ended up with a bunch of loot for very little money, and I decided to compile a list of all the new gaming acquisitions here. The purpose of this post is to give myself a reference so that I won’t forget and actually will play all of the stuff I got, but I’m also interested in getting comments from my friends to see what games you all ended up with and what you think about them. Here’s my rundown, on Steam and off:

Steam:

  • Civilization V: Brave New World – I got this one just before the sale started and have played a few hours as one of the new civilizations, Morocco. I’ve been delving into the new trade route additions but haven’t gotten up to the new diplomacy and tourism additions yet. It’s all fantastic so far.
  • Sword of the Stars: The Pit – We were sent a review copy just before the sale, and I’ve only had time to play a couple of minutes. It looks like a sci-fi roguelike with some tactical combat elements.
  • Surgeon Simulator 2013 – This was my first purchase of the Steam sale. I got it when it was stupidly cheap, and so far I’ve succeeded at doing a heart transplant and losing my watch in the patient’s innards.

  • Hitman Absolution – I’ve already finished this on 360, but I got a free Steam code during the sale and am looking forward to playing through it again. I’ll probably focus more on the Contracts mode this time. Great game.
  • Roller Coaster Tycoon 3: Platinum – I played the earlier RC Tycoon games when they first came out but never got around to this one. The Platinum pack came with the base game and both expansion packs. I loved Bullfrog’s Theme Park when I was younger, and this looks like it just might fill that void.
  • System Shock 2 – This is one that I owned and played when it first came out but never finished. It became ridiculously cheap during the Steam sale, so now I’m looking forward to starting from the beginning and experiencing all of it again.
  • Sims 3: University Life – The only Sims 3 expansions I didn’t have prior to this Steam sale were University Life, Island Paradise, and the retro parts pack. I was hoping all of those would drop to prices similar to the discounts all the Sims 3 stuff got at the beginning of this year, but University Life was the only one whose price dropped into my “buy” range.
  • Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion – I somehow got a code for this one during the sale, and I don’t know where it came from. I already had Sins: Trinity but hadn’t had a chance to put much time into it yet. I’m intrigued by the turn based / real time hybrid and the graphics bump Rebellion gave the game, so I’ll be trying to learn this one soon.
  • Gunpoint – I had just a few specific titles on my wishlist at the beginning of the Steam sale, and Gunpoint was one that I grabbed as soon as it showed up as a flash sale. I haven’t started it yet but have heard great things.
  • Orcs Must Die! Franchise Pack – I never played either of the Orcs Must Die! games but always thought they looked neat. The overall franchise pack got a huge price cut, and I was able to get both games with all the add-ons for just a couple of bucks. I’ve already played a lot of the first game by now and really love the shooter / tower defense hybrid.

  • Bastion – I’ve had this on the 360 for a long time but never got around to playing much of it. With the next console generation around the corner and the likelihood of my playing on the 360 dwindling, I went ahead and got this on Steam when it was ultra cheap.
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown – Singshot DLCXCOM was my favorite game from 2012, but I held off on getting the DLC until now. It seemed overpriced at $7, and I’m glad I waited until it was around $1 before I got it. I plan to incorporate it into my big Iron Man Classic difficulty replay of the game.
  • Kerbal Space Program – I got a code for this one toward the end of the Steam sale. It’s a game that still is in alpha, even though it’s already quite popular. I kind of think I might hold off on playing it until the game is built out a bit more and gets into an actual release.
  • Rogue Legacy – Along with Gunpoint, this was the other indie game I set my sights on at the start of the sale. I’ve played an hour or two of it so far and really like the randomness and the castle / character building.
  • Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Collection – The last time there was a big Steam sale I got the Total War franchise pack that included everything other than Shogun 2. Now I have Shogun 2 and all its expansions and DLC, and I foresee much feudal Japanning in my future.
  • Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014 – Wizards sent a review code over just before the sale started, so I’ve only had time to play through a bit of the single player campaign. I love collectible card games, and I’ve really enjoyed all the entries in this PC series. 2014 looks to be the best of the bunch so far.

3DS:

  • Shin Megami Tensei 4 – I’d never played any of the Shin Megami Tensei or Persona games, so I was excited when I got a discount voucher for SMT4. I’ve already put some decent time into it and love the demon collecting / enhancing / fusing aspects of the gameplay.

Xbox 360:

  • Dark – We got a review copy a few days ago, but I haven’t had a chance to get started with it yet. The copy arrived after release, so the review isn’t as “on the clock” as they are when we get prerelease games. It looks to be a stealth vampire game and could be interesting.
  • The Walking Dead: 400 Days – We got the review code for this a few days ago, and Celeste already has played through it and talked about it on this week’s podcast. I’m looking forward to playing it when I have a solid block of time to plow right through.

What did you all get during the Steam sale? Anything you wanted to get but missed or decided against?
