Flash00

Today’s collectible is another first-string member of the Justice League, the Flash. DC Direct released this bust prior to the New 52 reboot, and surprisingly it’s the only Flash bust they’ve released in the series to date. He has a cool dynamic look with clear effects on the base to make it look like he’s in the midst of speeding away.

CaptainMarvel00

Captain Marvel (often erroneously called “Shazam”) hasn’t always been one of DC’s top tier, A-list superheroes, but I’ve always liked him a lot. I think a lot of that liking comes from his costume, which I think is one of the overall best superhero costume designs in comics. The colors are bright and heroic, and the gold lightning bolt is suitably iconic. I also really like the way his costume coordinates with other heroes and villains in his corner of the DC Universe (Black Adam, Mary Marvel, etc). In the New 52 relaunch, DC tweaked the costume a bit, but it still has the essential components I’ve always liked. This bust was the first one they made, back when they were producing under the name DC Direct.

Jade00

Many of the top-tier DC characters already have had multiple versions of busts in the ongoing collectible series from DC Direct, but Jade is one of the ones who only has had one bust produced. She’s not an A-list superhero, but she’s still a great character and comes from the pages of Green Lantern. I was planning to take some new photos today, but hearing the news of the death of Ryan Davis, co-founder of GiantBomb.com, hit me especially hard. I ended up putting off a whole bunch of things and just using these pictures I took a few years ago but hadn’t gotten around to posting here yet. Some new pictures will be forthcoming, just not today.

Catwoman00

I previously posted the Catwoman bust Adam Hughes designed for DC Direct’s collectibles line, and this Catwoman came out a while later, designed by Terry Dodson. Each of the Catwoman busts they’ve made for this series (including the third one in the purple outfit, which I’ll post later) has had the character in a different costume and with a unique look, something they haven’t managed to do for some of the other repeated characters.

BlackCanary00

Here’s one more bust from the Women of the DC Universe series before I start posting some of my male DC character collectibles. I do have more of the women, but I wanted to shift gears for a bit, so a bunch of dude heroes and bad guys will be posting here in the coming days. This last female is Black Canary, part of the line designed by Adam Hughes. She came with actual fabric / webbing stuff for her fishnets instead of sculpting them on. This likely means a whole lot of them are going to get snagged, and pristine condition busts will be at a premium in the future.

Batgirl00

There have been three Batgirl busts in the Women of the DC Universe / DC Comics Superheroes series so far, and this was the very first one. For some reason, all three have featured the Barbara Gordon version of the character, and they have yet to make any of the other Batgirls. It would be cool to see a Stephanie Brown bust at some point, but that seems unlikely right now, as the series is focusing entirely on New 52 characters at this point. Despite my complaining about the lack of variety, this Batgirl is one of my overall favorites in the whole series. She’s designed by Adam Hughes and, unlike a lot of the other pieces that have been produced from his artwork, this one actually looks like she stepped right out of one of his drawings. Batgirl comes with her cowl as a separate piece, which you can choose to hang from her hand or leave off entirely.

Hawkgirl00

Due to her wingspan, Hawkgirl is one of the larger busts in the early days of the Women of the DC Universe bust series. She’s also one of the best executed pieces, from the sculpting details on her wings to the paint application on her face and costume. This is the only Hawkgirl piece they’ve released in this series so far, but I fully expect to see a New 52 version wearing the face mask coming in the future.

BigBarda00

This post is going up after midnight, but I’m re-dating it for June 29 so as to keep my Project 365 string going. I had all the photos ready to post but suddenly ran into a WordPress error that prevented any images from uploading. Because of that, today’s post got shoved late, but I’m counting it as still valid for the Project 365 posts since it was a problem that had nothing to do with my keeping to the photo-taking schedule. In any case, today’s collectible is Big Barda from the Women of the DC Universe line, and this one is another designed by Adam Hughes.

PowerGirl00

This Power Girl was the first version of the character released in the Women of the DC Universe bust series and is designed by Adam Hughes. Adam does fantastic Power Girl art, and he did a great job putting this piece together, but the later Power Girl designed by Amanda Conner ended up looking better overall. The only real issue with this bust is that the paint work is a little strange. Her skintone is a bit too orange, and the detailing on her face is not quite up to par. As the Women of DC line progressed, the final production pieces have become better and more detailed, so it’s been a natural progression with some otherwise awesome collectibles having little griping points like the paint on this one.

DonnaTroy00

I’m back to working my way through the rest of my DC bust collection, and today’s photos are of the Donna Troy bust designed by Adam Hughes. This is the only Donna Troy they’ve made in this series so far, and while the bust design and execution look good, the physics of it are pretty terrible. She’s top-heavy and tends to lean to the front, which wouldn’t be a problem if DC Direct had made her base a little bigger and heavier. As it is, the base is tiny, making it very easy for her to tip over. I definitely am careful anytime I need to open the display case where I have her.
